The pitch

An open-source transport tycoon classic about moving cargo and passengers through rail, road, air, and sea networks.

How it plays

OpenTTD remains one of the best pure logistics sandboxes because the entire game is about network design. You connect industries and towns, plan rail junctions, manage transfers, upgrade fleets, handle congestion, and scale routes so coal, mail, oil, food, goods, and passengers reach the right destinations profitably. Its old-school presentation hides huge depth, especially once signaling, multi-track mainlines, station throughput, and cargo distribution start to matter. Because it is open source, moddable, and endlessly configurable, it can be a relaxed transport toy or a brutally optimized railway engineering exercise depending on how far you want to go.

Our verdict

"A more acquired taste. When it clicks for its audience, it really clicks."

The ledger

+ In its favor

  • Free to play — zero barrier to entry
  • Active modding community extends the game
  • "Logistics" is one of the genre's most rewarding loops

– Worth knowing

  • Smaller community than genre giants — fewer guides available
  • Late-game factories can test hardware performance
